Summer School on “Protection of Human Rights and EU Law Harmonization in the Accession Process” – Successfully Completed

Successful Completion of the Summer School in Saarbruecken within the framework of the DAAD and BMBF financed project Thematic Network „SEE | EU Cluster of Excellence in European and International Law“

From 17 until 30 July 2016 our first Summer School „Protection of Human Rights and EU Law Harmonization in the Accession Process“  took place within the framework of the DAAD and BMBF financed project Thematic Network „SEE | EU Cluster of Excellence in European and International Law“. In Saarbrücken five students from Saarland University together with 23 students from the Western Balkans have for two weeks made use of the opportunity to broaden their knowledge about the Protection of Human Rights and EU Law Harmonization in the Accession Process.

The Summer School was organized by the SEE | EU Cluster of Excellence in European and International Law, which apart from the Europa-Institut consists of 6 law schools in Belgrade, Montenegro, Sarajevo, Skopje, Tirana and Zagreb and the Centre for SEELS, and is financed by the German Academic Exchange Office and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. Professors and research associates from the partner universities passed their knowledge of European Union Law and Protection of Human Rights to the participants. Thus, the students had the opportunity to get to know more on preliminary ruling procedure, EU law harmonization with focus on private law, fundamentals of human rights protection on EU and international level, political rights, protection of minorities, antidiscrimination, ECHR and the relationship between ECHR and ECJ.

The participants had the chance to use the university libraries for individual academic research in order to proceed with their own research projects. Furthermore, an excursion to Strassbourg and a visit to the Council of Europe was organized. Apart from studying, the participants were also able to take part in free time activities and to establish friendships beyond the borders of their home countries, as well as to create a network of students, research assistants and professors interested in European Union.

Based on lectures of this summer school an online course will be created and published in the online campus of the SEE | EU Cluster of Excellence. One of the goals of the entire project is the establishment of further online courses on various topics of EU and international law. The success of the Summer School „Protection of Human Rights and EU Law Harmonization in the Accession Process“ and the positive feedback of the participants encourage us to continue carrying out the project in the future.
